Briogeo Review: Superfoods Hair Care Products

Finding good, healthy products that naturally enhances hair can be tricky. Briogeo has created a line of superfood hair products to assist with just that.

When I first heard about Briogeo hair products, I was excited to see what they could do. The first thing I did was take their hair quiz. This quiz is quick, but important to help the brand determine which products might be best for each individual person.

Luckily, the quiz is only 5 questions long. But, since I don’t really have many hair concerns, it took me a little longer to figure out the best responses.

The questions I had to think about and my answers were:

The first product I tried when I received my new Briogeo products was the Scalp Revival Dry Shampoo. Since I had never used a dry shampoo before, I wasn’t really sure how it was supposed to work.

The directions made it sound easy, so that was reassuring. All I had to do was shake the bottle, then twist the lid (like a spray sunscreen bottle) to open up the nozzle. The directions told me to lightly squeeze the bottle about 5-6 inches away from my scalp and let the product settle. I was supposed to let it sit for approximately 2 minutes and then comb through my hair.

I did all of these things, but continually ran across issues with the application. The product didn’t evenly distribute at all, and definitely seemed like an outside job because it got everywhere. The areas where more product settled on my scalp, even after combing through, made my scalp itchy throughout the day.

Even though I didn’t like the application, I did notice that my hair was less oily when I used it on days that I didn’t shampoo. So, I found the results of this product pleasing, but probably wouldn’t buy it again because it made such a mess.

To be honest, I was unsure how I was going to like the Briogeo Superfoods Banana + Coconut Hair Pack. Both banana and coconut seem to be a bit more on the oily side. Since I have more oily hair, I just didn’t see how that was going to work well for me.

However, I have to say that I absolutely loved this product! It does smell an awful lot like Hawaiian Tropic suntan lotion. Generally, I am fine with this smell, and it makes me feel like I’m on vacation somewhere instead of in my shower. However, my hope was that it wasn’t going to make my hair smell like that all day. And it didn’t disappoint.

My hair had a nice clean smell, but didn’t smell like the tropics. And, after the first time using it I noticed that my hair was softer and seemed shinier. My spouse started using these products also and noticed that his mild dandruff issue went away. It’s been almost a month now and no recurrence. So, we are both extremely happy with the product and will continue to use it.

In similar fashion as the dry shampoo, I’d never heard of a co-wash. So I had no idea what to expect when I got the Briogeo Avocado + Quinoa Co-wash in. Luckily for me, the bottle came with pretty clear instructions.

Since it said to trade off every other day with a regular sudsing shampoo, I waited until I had used the other shampoo and conditioner for a couple of weeks before I worked this into the rotation.

I can tell you that it looks and feels like a conditioner coming out of the bottle, so I had concerns. It does not suds, which is fine, as long as it cleans. This product was certainly clean, but it left my hair feeling really heavy and oily. I only used it once because my hair was a hot mess the next day due to it. I ended up having to put in some of the dry shampoo to combat the extra oil.

However, my spouse’s hair is drier than mine and he really loved it. He said it helped his scalp feel well moisturized and his hair much shinier and healthier. So, I think this product would be a better fit for someone with more of a dry scalp than myself.

Ultimately, I can’t say that the hair quiz really worked to my benefit to choose the best products. Two of them seemed to work pretty well, but the last one was not a good fit for me at all. While the quiz is a great idea, I feel that it may need some more work to hone in on the best individual product suggestions still.

Briogeo was founded on the idea of creating high quality, natural hair care products. So the hope is that all of their products abide by this rule. To start out with, all of their products are 6-free. This means that the company doesn’t allow any of the top 6 controversial potentially harmful or toxic ingredients into any of their formulations.

These products include:

• Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – a surfactant that strips the natural oils of the skin and weakens the barrier, making it easier for toxins to creep in.
• Silicone – can prevent nutrients and moisture from penetrating into the hair follicle
• Phthalates – linked to cancer, reproductive toxicity, and endocrine disruption
• Parabens – endocrine disruptors
• DEA (Diethanolamine) – functions as an emulsifier or foaming agent and has been linked to cancer
• Artificial Dyes – depending upon what is used as the artificial dye, many negative side effects can occur. Some of these include blindness, skin irritation, allergic reaction, and cancer.

This is a great start, with regard to quality. Plus, all of their products are gluten free, cruelty free and mostly vegan. Their products range between 90% – 100% all natural. Briogeo states that the remaining percentage of the products are made up of ingredients that help with shelf life, stability, and efficacy.

But, they do state that any man-made products they use in this regard are deemed safe by the Environmental Working Group. I can tell you that the products I tried ranged from 96% – 99% naturally derived ingredients. So I really liked this aspect of the products.

The brand claims all of their products are formulated and manufactured in the United States. Which is fantastic! Except, that nowhere does the brand indicate where the products are sourced from or whether their manufacturing plants have any certifications for quality.

This area could require a bit more transparency in order to elicit a higher level of trust that the company warrants. Other than that though, the products Briogeo is creating are definitely a higher quality than most other hair care products I’ve run across previously.

Ultimately, Briogeo appears to be working hard to create good quality, all natural hair care products. These products are meant to make your hair healthier, shinier, softer, and easier to manage. They are doing this by using almost 100% naturally derived ingredients. They also incorporate a high level of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamins into every product.

By using ingredients that nature provides, Briogeo is helping to heal the hair from the outside. And by including Briogeo superfoods hair products into your hair health regimen, it can assist with creating a whole new way of looking at your hair.

I personally really enjoyed most of the products and the results they warranted me. However, their products are still a bit steep for my blood. Therefore, I might have to work these in only once or twice a week to make them more affordable on my budget.
