What about Scanpan?
One of our readers recently inquired about Scanpan, wondering if it could be a healthier alternative to the typical Teflon® pan. This question got me thinking, why does Scanpan keep grabbing people's attention?
After finding myself in need of yet another replacement for a regular non-stick fry pan that lost its effectiveness, I decided to thoroughly investigate Scanpan Classic skillets.
Could this be the solution to my frying pan woes? It's worth noting that these pans don't come cheap, with prices easily exceeding $50-60 for the smaller sizes.
Scanpan, a company established in Denmark in 1956, prides itself on being environmentally friendly. They claim to use absolutely no PFOA/PFOS in their non-stick coating and utilize recycled aluminum in their pans.
So far, it seems promising.
BUT WHAT IS THE NON-STICK COATING THEN?
As stated on the Scanpan website, their patented Ceramic Titanium surface is 10 times harder than steel. What's even more impressive is that it is safe to use metal utensils on it! This feature ensures that the pan is highly resistant to scratches.
SO ITS NOT TEFLON THEN?
Teflon, technically known as PTFE, is a brand name owned by Dupont for a plastic non-stick coating. It can be compared to using Kleenex instead of tissue paper or Xerox for any photocopier. The non-stick coating on Scanpan, like the majority of non-stick coatings, does contain PTFE. However, the SCANPAN formula utilizes a patented ceramic titanium surface construction that enhances its durability, making it highly resistant to abrasion and ensuring its longevity.
Rest assured, this is not the Teflon your grandma used to have!
SO ITS NO HEALTHIER THAN A REGULAR NONSTICK PAN THEN?
The nonstick coating in Scanpan cookware is made from PTFE, which is a base compound used in all nonstick coatings. PTFE is a harmless inert plastic that can pass through the body without causing any harm if ingested. However, it is important to note that PFOA, which was previously used in the manufacturing process of these pans, is toxic and is no longer used.
To break down the coating and emit fumes, the pan would need to be heated to a temperature of 660F. These fumes are harmless to humans but can be harmful to birds. However, during normal cooking, frying, or baking, cookware does not reach such high temperatures. In fact, a report suggests that fumes released from margarine are in the same category and potentially more harmful to certain bird species.
In summary, Scanpan is a safe cookware option with a stronger and more durable nonstick surface compared to ordinary pans.
SO WHAT ARE SCANPAN SKILLETS MADE OF?
Scanpan Classic skillets are crafted from pressure cast aluminium, a manufacturing process that involves applying 200 tons of pressure to mold the liquid aluminum alloy into the ideal pan shape. This meticulous technique ensures the absence of any trapped air or impurities. As a result, you can enjoy a flawlessly flat pan base, impeccable heat distribution, an absence of hot spots, and exceptional heat retention. The company claims that the thickness of the pan base has been scientifically determined to facilitate rapid and uniform heating.
ARE THESE PANS OVEN AND BROILER SAFE?
Scanpan claims that their pans are versatile and can be used to cook a wide range of dishes. With the ability to withstand high temperatures of up to 500° F in both the oven and broiler, these pans are highly durable. The combination of a thick base and a ceramic titanium surface enables efficient browning, searing, and deglazing. In essence, these pans offer the convenience of a non-stick pan while possessing the capabilities of a cast iron pan.
WHAT ABOUT THE HANDLES?
The handle of each product is secured with a unique locking mechanism, which eliminates the need for screws or rivets. This innovative design guarantees that the handle remains securely in place without any risk of becoming loose over time. Additionally, this feature makes cleaning effortless as there are no crevices for food to get trapped around the rivets.
ARE THESE PANS DISHWASHER SAFE?
Yes, indeed they are. However, as your Cookware Advisor, I strongly recommend handwashing your cookware regardless of the manufacturer's instructions. Cleaning them is a breeze and it requires only a minimal amount of time to apply soap, use a sponge, and rinse them off.
CAN SCANPAN PANS BE USED ON INDUCTION RANGES?
No, they do not have compatibility with induction cooking.
WHAT ABOUT THE WARRANTY?
Scanpan pans come with a full lifetime warranty.
WHAT ARE OTHERS SAYING?
Scanpan pans are highly regarded by users who appreciate their durability and non-stick coating. Many long-time users have attested to the longevity of these pans and their ability to maintain their non-stick finish over time.
This is particularly beneficial as it eliminates the need to constantly replace pans on a yearly basis, saving both time and money.
Personally, I believe that Scanpans are an exceptional option for anyone in need of a reliable non-stick frying pan. I am convinced of their quality and effectiveness, and I wonder if you feel the same way.
Although these pans may come with a higher price tag, I have always managed to find great deals on Amazon.
